Mr Epsom, Area Manager at Southern Rail spoke to the meeting held in July 2012 of the Carshalton & Clockhouse local committee about Southern Rail’s recently-introduced one-way system at Carshalton Station running between North Street and West Street.
The One-Way System at Carshalton Railway Station had been introduced for reasons that he explained, but he was happy to look at the possible options and alternatives if those attending the meeting desired.
The change from a ‘No through road’ had come when residents requested accessibility improvements. These had been introduced but the restricted road width subsequent to these improvements had meant a one-way system was necessary. Mr Epsom was happy to review the direction of the one-way with the Council.
Cllr. Jill Whitehead said that she was concerned the current one-way system had been introduced without consultation. She had had several complaints. Opposition and some support for road humps was expressed by residents.
A number of residents supported a change in the direction of traffic flow, pointing out this would be beneficial to residents at both ends of the neighbourhood.
Residents commended Southern Rail for the welcome improvements at the station carried out in recent years and for the changes introduced elsewhere. A request for the northern entrance to the station to be re-opened was made, but new changes were likely to be delayed pending the re-franchising arrangements.
Other suggestions made included; one way surface ‘strips’, 10mph limit, cycle route, speed reduction signs, removing parking and a drop off point.
Cllr. Jill Whitehead asked if the gap between the train and the platform at Carshalton Beeches Railway Station could be addressed. This would also depend upon re-franchising.
