Carshalton Park: New Gates Completed

Thanks indeed, again, to Richard,  a committee member of the Friends of Carshalton Park for permission to show the two photos that follow of the completed gates in the park.

These gates will enable better access arrangements for the vehicles using the park on the big local occasions that the park is used by thousands of people at a time, such as the Carshalton Carnival in June, the Environmental Fair on August Bank Holiday Monday and the Fireworks in November.

Royal Mail Deliveries … SOME CHANGES TO ROYAL MAIL SERVICES IN CARSHALTON & WALLINGTON POSTAL DISTRICTS

Councillors have received this message from the Royal Mail:

“For the attention of the Chief Executive and Council

Royal Mail is making some changes to the way it delivers mail in the SM5 and SM6 postcode areas over the next few weeks. From this week postmen and women will use new delivery methods and adopt revised delivery routes as these changes are introduced on a phased basis.  We are writing to every address in Wallington about these changes and this includes households, businesses and other organisations.

Royal Mail provides one of the most comprehensive and best value mail services in the world. Our postmen and women play a vital role in Wallington, as well as across the rest of the UK, where we deliver to almost 29 million addresses, six days a week.

However, we need to modernise the way we operate. We are therefore making changes in Wallington to maintain our services and to keep our prices as low as possible.

Why we are making these changes?

The way in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically. Unfortunately, fewer letters are now posted every day and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible. We also deliver more larger items and so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.
The new equipment also reduces the risk of injury to our postmen and women from carrying heavier mail bags.

What this means for the Wallington area:

Royal Mail will continue to deliver in the morning and for a longer period during the day.

  • Many customers will continue to get their mail by lunchtime.
  • The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the new delivery route. This may be later or possibly earlier than current delivery times.
  • When mail volumes vary, we may need to adjust delivery arrangements and times.

Kind Regards

James Mitchell

The Old Forge, High Street, Carshalton – Update

The Old Forge in Carshalton’s High Street was photographed on Saturday, 28th April 2012.

The redevelopment proposals are awaited from the owner/developer. We hope that any proposals will respect the history of the site and preserve the original building’s masonry where feasible.  We have asked the Council’s planning enforcement officers to keep an eye on the site in case of need.

Education…education…education. Primary school expansions for 2013 – consultation

Sutton Council is consulting residents on plans to expand another five schools in time for a predicted surge in applications in September 2013.

At the last Carshalton & Clockhouse Local Committee of  Tuesday, 24th April, we heard how Sutton has one of the highest birth rates in London, and over the past four years has seen a dramatic increase in the number of families applying for primary school places in the borough.

Data from the Greater London Assembly suggests this trend is set to continue. In October 2011, 13,927 pupils attended Sutton Primary schools. By September 2014 this is predicted to rise to 15,906 and by September 2016 it is expected to reach 16,996.

Figures from the Department for Education reveal an additional 100,000 places will be needed across London over the next three years.

Sutton Council anticipated this increase and has been expanding its primary schools for the past three years. Planning ahead is crucial, so the council wants to know what people think about its most recent plans to make sure there are enough places for the start of the 2013 school year.

The schools being considered for expansion are: Amy Johnson Primary School, Avenue Primary School, St Mary’s RC Infant and Junior School  in Carshalton and Dorchester Primary School. Each school would provide one extra form of entry, meaning an extra class of 30 children would be able to start school in September 2013.

Extra places could also be provided at the former Stanley Park High School site, by opening an annexe to another school, Bandon Hill Primary.

Residents can have their say on the proposals through an online questionnaire and the expansions were discussed at all the six local area committee meetings throughout March and April, Carshalton & Clockhouse local committee being one of the last.

Cllr. Kirsty Jerome, Executive Member for Education and Schools at Sutton Council, said: “It’s really important we plan ahead wherever possible, which is why we’re asking people for their thoughts well in advance of when we’re going to need these extra places.

“We’ve worked with governors, teachers, parents and pupils to expand primary schools over the last few years and it’s been very successful. The schools tell us the extra children and facilities we’ve been able to provide have enhanced their school communities and they’ve been able to continue to achieve the excellent results which have put Sutton in the top four performing local authorities in the country.

“As the number of children applying for school places in Sutton continues to increase we are continuing to lobby the Government for more funding so we can ensure every child has a place at a local school.”

Residents can have their say by filling in an online consultation at www.sutton.gov.uk. Paper copies will be sent to all schools. The closing date for responses is Monday 14 May.

£15m boost for primary school places is not enough, warns Sutton Council

Sutton Council has welcomed the news it will receive extra funding for primary school places – but warned this must be followed up with continued investment over the coming years.

Following warnings from councils across London, including Sutton, that extra funding is urgently needed, the Department for Education announced a £600m pot to help the areas most affected by rising pupil numbers. Sutton will receive a £15m share of that money for the 2012/13 school year.

Cllr Kirsty Jerome, Executive Member for Education and Schools at Sutton Council, said: “We’ve campaigned hard for extra money from the Department for Education to make sure we can provide places in our schools for our local children, so I’m glad Mr Gove is directing this money where it is needed.

“It is important that boroughs like Sutton continue to receive this funding, as demand continues to increase, and of course all of these extra pupils will soon need secondary school places too.

“The DfE has recognised that this is a serious issue for Sutton and schools across London, but this piecemeal approach to funding means it’s very hard to plan ahead. We’re calling on the department to think ahead like we are so we can ensure we have plenty of places for local children in the coming years.”

Sutton has one of the highest birth rates in London, and over the past four years has seen a dramatic increase in the number of families applying for primary school places in the borough.

Data from the Greater London Assembly suggests this trend is set to continue. In October 2011, 13,927 pupils attended Sutton Primary schools. By September 2014 this is predicted to rise to 15,906 and by September 2016 it is expected to reach 16,996.

The latest round of money from the DfE will help to expand five primary schools –  All Saints Benhilton Church of England Primary, All Saints Carshalton Church of England Primary, Brookfield Primary and The Federation of St Elphege’s Catholic Infant and Junior and Cheam Infants and Juniors – in time for the start of the new school year in September.

Sutton Council recently launched a consultation to gather views about expanding another four schools in time for September 2013. It is also looking into providing places on the site of the former Stanley Park High School.

Sutton’s primary schools celebrated some of the best SATs results in the country this year, coming number three in the national league tables. The borough also recorded the best GCSE results in the country.

Wentworth Hall – Update

We notice the on-going building works at Wentworth Hall, hopefully in accordance with the planning approval given some time ago.

The site at 80 Ruskin Road, Carshalton is at the junction with Woodstock Road.  The scheme is to enlarge the religious building use currently by the Muslim Cultural Welfare Association of Sutton.

Bus Route X26 Improvements Campaign

Bus services on the X26 route, which runs through Carshalton with stops in Carshalton High Street, have increased in frequency and will run every 30 minutes late into the evening.

The move follows a public consultation by TfL that found there was general support for the change. Local MP Tom Brake said, “This is excellent news for those who rely on the X26 in the evening. I can only hope that TfL also responds to the continuing public demand for the X26 to stop at the Plough in Beddington. It is certainly something I will continue to pursue”.  According to a recent article on Tom Brake’s web site, Dan Saleem, a local teenager from Wallington expressed support for the increased bus frequency, “it is great that TfL have increased the frequency of X26, it is more flexible for local residents like me.” He also added: “I do hope that the Plough Lane issue can be resolved soon and I am pleased that my local MP continues to keep it in the spotlight”.

The X26 will now run every 30 minutes until the last departures at about 2310 from Croydon and midnight from Heathrow.

Buildings in The Grove Park

Sutton Council have decided to put up two small residential buildings in The Grove Park for disposal. These are The Grove Park Lodge and Farm Cottage.  Information about this was circulated at the meeting of the Council’s Carshalton & Clockhouse Local Committee held on Tuesday, 24th April 2012.

All Saints’ School Extension – The Building Works Begin

Cllr. Hamish Pollock reports: “At All Saints’ School, Rotherfield Road, Carshalton, the builders have started work at about 9am on Saturday 28th April 2012 with the erection of the enclosure to the site compound. A small part of the playground has had to be sacrificed at the corner near the junction of Rotherfield Road with Talbot Road.”

Friends of The Grove Park AGM

The three ward councillors attended the 16th Annual General Meeting of the Friends of The Grove Park at the Water Tower on Saturday, 21st April 2012.

We heard of the exciting plans being made for the celebration of the Olympic Torch passing through Carshalton by Carshalton Ponds on Monday, 23rd July 2012 including a giant mock-up swan in the upper pond (the ancient and traditional symbol of Carshalton).  Cllr. Hamish Pollock was very honoured indeed to have been elected chair of the Friends’ Group for the first time.
