The construction works are being carried out in the Carshalton War Memorial Gardens off Honeywood Walk and are due to be completed fairly soon.  The works have been funded entirely by the council’s Carshalton and Clockhouse Committee out of its Public Realm budgets.

The gardens near Carshalton Ponds will be reopened towards the end of May.

Mill Lane / Butter Hill junction

Cllr. Jill Whitehead has asked Sutton Council officers to enforce the traffic signs at this junction. She says:

“Could traffic be enforced at the junction of Mill Lane and Butter Hill at busy times of day please? Councillors have received complaints of driver anger, with refusal to give way over the narrow bridge.  We hope some additional/better signage would also help.”

Councillors Jill Whitehead, Alan Salter and Hamish Pollock have represented the Carshalton Central ward on Sutton Council as a team since the May 2010 local councsutton_council_logoil elections. They will be fully involved in the coming 2014 local elections to be held on Thursday, 22nd May.

To vote:

                • non-postal voters in Carshalton Central ward will be notified of voting at only one of the three usual polling stations in the ward, depending upon where they live. The polling stations are:-

                2. Highfield Hall, Carshalton Road.
                3. All Saints’ C of E School, Rotherfield Road.

Jill says:

Please register to vote in these important elections, if you have not already done so. To be assured of a postal vote, your postal vote application forms need to be at the Electoral Registration Officer, London Borough of Sutton, Civic Offices, St. Nicholas Way, Sutton, SM1 1EA by 5pm on Wednesday, 7th May 2014.  Telephone 020-8770 4179 for a form. You have 3 weeks to do so!

Carshalton Central ward is one of nine wards that make up the constituency of Carshalton and Wallington represented in the UK Parliament since 1997 by Tom Brake MP. The London Borough of Sutton includes 18 wards in total – all of this constituency and also all of the Sutton and Cheam constituency that is made up of the nine other wards of the borough.

The next local elections are to be held on Thursday, 22nd May 2014, where eligible voters will each have three votes.

Usually these local elections are held on the first Thursday in May, but this year they will be put back from 1st May to 22nd May so as to coincide with the 2014 European Parliament Elections on that date. Direct elections are to be held for all 32 London boroughs, all 36 metropolitan boroughs, 74 second-tier district authorities, 20 unitary authorities and various mayoral posts, all in England. Elections to the new councils in Northern Ireland will also be held on the same day.

All registered electors (British, Irish, Commonwealth and European Union citizens) who are aged 18 or over on the day of the election are entitled to vote in the local elections. Those who are temporarily away from their ordinary address (for example, away working, on holiday, in student accommodation or in hospital) are also entitled to vote in the local elections, although those who have moved abroad and registered as overseas electors cannot vote in the local elections. Those who are registered to vote at more than one address (such as a university student who has a term-time address and lives at home during holidays) are entitled to vote in the local elections at each address, as long as they are not in the same local government area.

The count for these sets of elections is likely to take some considerable time whilst ballots are sorted and so forth, and the result of the local council elections should be known by the early morning of Friday, 23rd May 2014.

Other WW1 memorials are at Worcester Park, Belmont, Cheam and Wallington.

Sporting stars of the future getting ready to represent Sutton

Sutton youngsters are getting ready for sporting glory as tryouts begin for this year’s London Youth Games.

Sutton Community Sport & Physical Activity Team are running the first set of trials and training for the Sutton Youth Teams in April and May. Those selected to become part of the team will compete in the London Youth Games and represent Sutton.

There are trials coming up over the next few weeks for:- Boys Basketball, Girls Hockey, Badminton, Boys & Girls Football, Table Tennis, Trampoline, and Netball and more.

Trial and training sessions are free to all young people aged 11-17 years (age varies according to the sports rules) who either live in Sutton or attend a Sutton school. Athletes do not have to be experts but they should be competent in their chosen sport, familiar with the competition rules and have bags of energy and enthusiasm!

Those selected for the Sutton squad will compete in free competitions in June and July and at the finals at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on 5 & 6 July, against young athletes from across all the 33 London Boroughs.

Carshalton Central ward councillor Jill Whitehead, Chair of Sutton Council’s Environment and Neighbourhoods Committee, said:

“The London Youth Games trials are a great opportunity for Sutton’s young people to show their sporting talents. The Games boast a proud tradition of producing many Olympic and Paralympic medallists. I hope that Sutton’s sporting stars of the future will come out in force to take part.”

To book a place at any of these trials call Sutton Community Sport & Physical Activity Team on: 020 8770 4667 or e-mail: getactivestayactive@sutton.gov.uk Or check out the Council website on: www.sutton.gov.uk/londonyouthgames .

Residents urged to recycle old winter wardrobes

sutton_council_logoNow that winter has almost past and spring is arriving, people are beginning to consider clearing out their winter wardrobes. However, instead of throwing away unwanted clothes, residents are being asked to take them to local textile banks or donate them directly to local charities.

The council has several textile banks at neighbourhood recycling centres across the borough, and any funds raised from them are donated to the Mayor’s charity Sutton Mental Health Foundation. Many charities and community groups also collect clothing, shoes and other textiles to raise funds.

Primarily the council is looking for good quality second-hand clothing but almost everything taken to the textiles banks will be reused. If an item of clothing is not good enough to be re-worn, it may be turned into industrial wiping clothes or compressed to make upholstery padding.

Sutton Council already collects 164 tonnes of unwanted clothes and textiles each year, but about £280,000 worth of used clothing and shoes in the borough still goes to landfill and generates 823 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Residents are being encouraged to recycle clothes as part of the council’s ‘One Planet Sutton’ target to be a carbon neutral borough by 2025. The ‘One Planet Sutton’ Plan aims to give residents a better quality of life and boost the local economy while radically reducing the borough’s negative impact on the environment. Recycling also helps raise money to increase local charities’ income.

Carshalton Central ward Cllr Jill Whitehead, who is Chair of Sutton Council’s Environment and Neighbourhoods Committee, said:

“It’s great that so many residents are using our recycling services, but we want to be an even greener borough. We’d like to encourage more people to recycle their unwanted clothes, shoes and handbags so that we can make an even bigger difference.

“If you’re clearing out your wardrobe over the next few weeks, please remember that there are many ways to recycle items you no longer need, such using the council’s textile banks or giving items directly to charity. Donating to a charity or community group helps raise funds for the organisations that do great work locally.

“Recycling means less waste goes to landfill, which reduces our landfill tax and saves the council money which can be put into other services. It also reduces our CO2 emissions, helps to prevent climate change and reduces our reliance on fossil fuels.”

Debbie Wilson, Manager and Donna Welch, Assistant Manager at St Raphael’s Hospice charity shop in Rosehill said:

“We urgently need sellable donations in all our branches.

“Unfortunately a lot of people do not realise that we can still get money for the charity from clothes, shoes, bedding, and bags even if they are not suitable for resale in our shops. This is because we are paid for them by a recycling company – and every penny made goes directly to our hospices.”

Carshalton’s Second World War Memorial – Work Progresses

Cllr. Hamish Pollock reports:-

“It is not every day that an architect such as myself has the chance to design a war memorial and get it built. Anyway, the new World War Two (1939-1945) war memorial that I designed for Carshalton is progressing on site and should be completed in about a fortnight’s time. A sneak photo was taken on Wednesday, 9th April 2014. The full cost of the war memorial was entirely funded by Sutton Council’s Public Realm allocation to the Carshalton & Clockhouse Local Committee”.
